“Change Dangers into Opportunities: Creating a Safe Campus” - The On-Campus Chemical Disaster Prevention Education Program is launched

        Today (the 17th), the on-campus disaster prevention education program “Change Dangers into Opportunities: Creating a Safe Campus” was taken place at Tsinghua University. Not only was Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) Shen invited to deliver a speech, but also the Ministry of Education and Hsinchu City Government were invited to join this event. It is expected that, by holding this event, toxic and chemical disaster prevention activities will be promoted on campus, helping students to enhance their awareness towards toxic and chemical disasters and their response activity thereto.

        United Nation (UN) has set April 22 the Earth Day and June 5 the World Environment Day with different themes and action plans each year. In response to the Earth Day and World Environment Day, EPA, Executive Yuan has set this year the first year of “Taiwan Environment Season” and April to June of each year the “Environment Season”. As the theme of this year’s Earth Day is “Protect our Species”, EPA has themed the environment season of this year on “Protect our Species and Create a Sustainable Environment”.

        To operate in coordination with EPA’s environment season, Toxic and Chemical Substances Bureau (TSCB) specially held a toxic and chemical disaster prevention program at Tsinghua University; and relevant on-campus activities in 48 schools nationwide. It is expected that, through these experiencing activities, students will be remember what they have learned therefrom and further ensure the safety of laboratory. As for graduates, what they have learned from experiencing activities will be brought to workplace, protecting themselves from potential hazards.

        Following the objectives and creative design of toxic and chemical disaster prevention programs held in precedent two years, “Change Dangers into Opportunities: Creating a Safe Campus” was launched to merge educational disaster prevention activities with classes in order to better promote relevant ideas in an interesting way and to enhance teachers and students’ participation. This year, the program is designed with five activities: “GHS Guess Fun”; video watching; wearing protective equipment; experiencing detection equipment; and “Claw Crane Fun”. Students who completed the first four activities would enter the last stage to experience the fun of claw crane; and, after answering the question from the crane machine correctly”, they will receive an exquisite propaganda from the organizer. The program this year is carried out in forms of games and experiencing activities with an expectation to enhance students’ disaster prevention capabilities.
