With the New Year coming, spring brings full of life and hope. Do you know about the Green Chemistry? Chemistry is closely related to daily life. Green Chemistry is good for the environment and is even better for human being. From the perspective of environmental friendliness, Green Chemistry is a sustainable business strategy, and it is one of major task in Toxic and Chemical Substances Bureau (TCSB).
To improve the management of chemicals and develop general education for public, the TCSB, Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) has actively promoted Green Chemistry education since 2017. In 2018, TCSB united the consensus of domestic experts and scholars and co-organized the "1st College Creative Competition Green Chemistry Contest” with the Ministry of Education (MOE). This activity sets several goals including encourage the students to creative, invent and explore more about science to motivate the students to learn more beyond their measure; also, to integrate safe, environmental friendly, and Green Chemistry concept into teaching, especially for the academic community to feel the feasibility and the importance of Green Chemistry.
In fierce competition, one gold medal, two silver medals, three bronze medals and several honorable mentions were selected in each category of the contest. The TCSB and the MOE invited the winners, advisors, and competition judges to give their feedbacks from the study project and competition, and explain their experiences and achievements learning from Green Chemistry in the award ceremony. The promotion of the Green Chemistry creative competitions in colleges and universities and the cooperation with the MOE to build green campus that represents the sustainable develop goal of TCSB.
The concept of Green Chemistry is promoted through competitions and campus advocacy so that everyone can work together to develop sustainable green living value, and to create a low-toxic, waste-prevention, energy-saving, healthy, and safe environment. TCSB also stated that they will continue to organize activities such as diverse educational promotion of Green Chemistry, industrial implementation, and environmental friendliness in addition to current Green Chemistry education promotion in colleges and universities with the ME TCSB.
The "2nd College Creative Competition in Green Chemistry " will be officially launched in January 2020. The contest has been well-planned. Participating students and people interested in Green Chemistry must pay close attention to the websites of the TCSB and the EPA and the Chemi Life Facebook page.
The themes of the "2nd College Creative Competition in Green Chemistry " include 12 principles of Green Chemistry, Green Chemistry education, and related tasks of the TCSB. The competition groups are divided into 2 categories: “the college and undergraduate students" and "the graduate students. Each team must have an advisors, and limited to three members per team (cross-school teams are allowed). This year's contest will select one gold medal, one silver medal, two bronze medals, and several honorable mentions in each category. A special “Lab Safety Award” will be selected as well. The total prize is up to NT$ 500,000. All students are welcome to participate!
