EPA added Wolbachia Pipientis, a microbial preparation applied to environmental control of disease vectors, on the control list

On October 17 of 2018, Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) announced to add Wolbachia Pipientis, a microbial species applied to control dengue disease and vectors, to better manage microbial preparation used to prevent environmental diseases and vectors. Those who desire to produce or import such microbial preparation for controlling disease and vector shall apply for a permit from EPA in accordance with Environmental Agents Control Act.

EPA expressed that the application of microbial agents in disease and vector control has become a trend around the world. “Specificity” and “no chemical residue” are the strengths of these microbial agents. To respond to technological progress, not only are Bacillus thuringiensis, Bacillus sphaericus, Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium anisopliae announced as microbial agents for environmental pesticide, but also Wolbachia Pipientis that is used to control dengue vector mosquito internationally, has been added to the list.
