Online Award Ceremony of Green Chemistry for Sustainability

  • Department:Comprehensive Planning Division

The Environmental Protection Administration (EPA), Executive Yuan  and the Ministry of Education jointly held the " Online Award Ceremony of Green Chemistry for Sustainability" on October 8 to encourage innovative research and development of low-pollution and low-toxicity alternatives for green chemistry, reduce the application of toxic chemicals, implement hazard prevention management, strengthen emergency disaster response capabilities, and promote green chemistry education.

The awards include the "2nd Green Chemistry Application and Innovation Award" to encourage the industry, and the "2020 Annual Green Chemistry Innovation Competition for Senior High Schools" and the "2nd Green Chemistry Innovation Competition for Colleges and Universities" to encourage creativity among high school and college students to promote the 12 principles of green chemistry for toxicity reduction, waste reduction, energy saving and safety. A total of 80 individuals and teams were awarded. The award ceremony is a grand event for the industry, academia and research community. The winning teams and individuals gathered in one place to praise and share the honor and joy of the winners, hoping that through the passing down of experience, the fruitful achievements of green chemistry research will continue to shine in Taiwan. In addition, John Warner, the father of green chemistry in the United States, was specially invited to congratulate the event via a video, adding more glamor to the event.

The 2nd Green Chemistry Application and Innovation Awards" organized by the Toxic and Chemical Substances Bureau of the EPA had nearly 100 entries, and after preliminary selection, on-site investigation/interview and runoff meeting, 14 top-performing organizations and 10 individuals were selected. The award-winning units are all benchmarks for promoting green chemistry. In the group category, the award-winning companies use non-toxic processes, develop environment-friendly materials, actively manage chemical substances, and promote toxic chemical disaster prevention and relief, creating a friendly environment with green chemistry. Their hard work in the industry has enabled Taiwan’s green chemistry to continue to sprout and thrive in the industry. In the individual category, the award-winning individuals have all been deeply involved in green chemistry research for a long time, and have internalized the concept of green chemistry in their lives, brought it into their research concepts and passed it on to the next generation. The award recipients are all important contributors to Taiwan's green chemical environment and are respected as role models and exemplars for all sectors.

In addition, in order to promote college students' interest in green chemistry and stimulate the creativity of students and teachers, the EPA and the Ministry of Education jointly organized the "2020 Annual Green Chemistry Innovation Competition for Senior High Schools" and the "2nd Green Chemistry Innovation Competition for Colleges and Universities" to encourage students' potential to create inventions and explore the spirit of science, and to promote the 12 principles of green chemistry (PRODUCTIVELY), receiving great supports from teachers and students. This year’s "2nd Green Chemistry Innovation Competition for Colleges and Universities" had 40 departments from 27 schools signed up, and 24 teams were selected. The "2020 Annual Green Chemistry Innovation Competition for Senior High Schools" had 242 teams signed up, and 28 teams and 4 schools were selected. This will allow more outstanding teachers and students to engage in green chemistry-related research, and provide a platform for healthy competition, promoting the concept of sustainable environmental development.

According to the EPA, in addition to the online award ceremony, a video presentation of "the Results Presentation Conference of Green Chemistry for Sustainability" was held at 2:00 p.m. on October 15, 2021 to expand the benefits of the awards. The award-winning teams were invited to share their achievements in the conference, hoping to share the honor and joy of the winners through the award presentation and the results presentation activities. It is also hoped that through the passing down of experience, the concept of green chemistry will be jointly promoted, and the public will all participate in the promotion of green chemistry, realizing the vision of "sustainable, safe and effective management of chemical substances."

The awarding content is available on the websites of the "Green Chemistry Application and Innovation Award" and the "Green Chemistry Innovation Competition for Colleges and Universities" of the EPA’s Toxic and Chemical Substances Bureau and the website of the "2020 Annual Green Chemistry Innovation Competition for Senior High Schools" of the Ministry of Education.
